Module Set

Does anyone know if there is a problem with me replacing an air bag module myself?

I have a ‘99 Chrysler Town and Country and I can get a used air bag module for $25 when the dealer wants to charge $400. Do I have the risk of setting off the airbags? What steps should I take to take care of it? Will I need to reset anything on my computer after I replace the module?

The dealership said it was the module after the car would not start. The engine started to turn over then stopped. Now all I get is clicking. We have had problems with door locks, dash illumination, gauges not functioning, ABS error codes, Engine light error cordes, etc. prior to the starting failure so if you think that it’s something else then let me know that too.
Battery checks OK and is 3 months old.
Alternator was checked 3 months ago and checked OK.
The car could not be jump started.

No problem, like above, but make sure to let it sit for 15 minutes or so after you disconnect the battery. It has a capacitor which keeps it “alive” for a bit and it takes a few minutes for it to discharge so it can’t set off the airbags.

Oops! wait a minute!

There’s nothing about the airbag module that will make a car not start!!!!

If it makes a rapid clicking noise, you have low voltage at the starter. Turn on the headlights. Look at them as you try to start the car. If they go dim, you have a low voltage problem.

This could be a bad battery, dirty battery terminals, or an alternator not charging.

If you have a battery charger, try charging the battery. If it strarts you probably have a bad alternator.

See if the terminals get hot. If so, they are dirty.

If it is a single click, it might be the starter.

But I’m really sure it’s not the airbag module!!!
