What is the difference bewteen a power source switching and an old-fashioned?
power and old fashion 60Hz AC goes into a transformer and the voltage steps. The thing is that at 60Hz you need large transformers with losses generated much heat and resistance. the ebaout sid good is that they are real workhorse and can take a lot of abuse. a source of change is only switches. take the 120v 60Hz AC, rectifies 160VDC then running through a solid state switch (transistor, FET, IC such thing) and switches the current on and off very fast (like the 24,000 Hz) and then introduced into a transformer, but due to the higher frequency, the transformer need only be a fraction of the size which is much more efficient because power is not wasted as heat. and since the processor is so small which makes them very light. The downside with them is if you abuse them the complex for circutry run supply buckle under that pressure, because it is more sensitive.
