6800GT SLI with 8800GT PCI-E?
I have a 6800GT (GeForce) and ordered a 8800GT PCI-e. I'm new to SLI so I can SLI together? Thank you!
N – as someone said you need 2 8800GTS or 2 6800GTs not one of each, but that does not have to have the same exact specifications, just the same GPU. They do not have to be exact althou twins suggest that they are. You can in fact an overclocked 8800GT SLI recorded with a standard 8800GT overclocked and the card will clock up the same speed recorded the card standard. You can also use a 256MB card with a 512MB card. Heres some videos that explain SLI http://www.slizone.com/object/slizone_diy_videoguide01.html

NVIDIA is a cut down set of options when choosing a motherboard SLI, you need an NVIDIA nForce with at least two PCI-e. For the benefit of two slots x16, you need a 780 or 790 to board, while the lower limit its 650/750 chipsets bandwidth to eight lanes in the second PCI card. That is well for connection to a pair of midrange cards, but slow GTXs Ultras or a more powerful platform.
All GeForce cards in SLI configuration also have to match – not necessarily by brand name, but by the kind of chips. It will only work with GeForce 8800GT GeForce 8800GT and other well on. AMD on the other hand, has a much more flexible platform. That is so true, because if they just use the Phenom chips now there would be no point in considering CrossFire at all. In our most recent tests with a Phenom 9600, the games were hitting the threshold of the CPU, even on a Radeon HD4850. Adding more Graphics cards no difference in game performance at all, because the CPU could not keep up.
In what seems a surprising whim Nature, however, you can put two or more cards from AMD in the current generation of Intel motherboard chipsets, and will work equally well. And unlike NVIDIA is not necessary to match the cards of the same type, just the same generation. Thus, an HD3850 work with a HD3870 and so on. Thus you can, in theory, design a system exactly to its price point.
Perhaps more important, in our extensive testing, pairing a Radeon HD4870 with a HD4850 is almost as fast as an 'agreement true' HD4870 CrossFire. If this state of affairs is true that mature drivers then you could end up saving $ l50 in a dual card set-up.
And that's the problem. Whatever the test results have today, there will be improvements for tomorrow: because getting the right multi-GPU performance is a fine art. For that reason alone, we are confident in saying that the Most people will be better with a single card.
It is common for the two cards to actually be less than one. Once it hits the top of the CPU, the more latency introduced in the second card with additional processing steps has a price. At higher resolutions, there is a stronger argument, but basically improvements are talking about framerate of less than 20 percent in real terms, especially after some image quality is selected.
So what is recommended? SLI or CrossFire? Of the new cards, CrossFire scales better than SLI in some games and vice versa. Where a combination of GeForce GTX 260s is the best option, performance overall benefits seem too great – so that from a technological standpoint, that probably would go for this way. However, two GTX 260s are noisy and $ 200 to $ 300 more expensive than buying two HD3870s, too, so that from a practical standpoint that our money would end up going.
Given the enormous amount of shader units involved, two HD4850s seems like a powerhouse Negotiating on paper but in reality it is much faster than a single HD4870, and all the arguments for a single chip more than two influence us for of the latter.
In fact, across the board saying hold off on building an SLI or CrossFire platform, by the time. For starters, X2 and the upcoming versions of the HD4870 and GX2 the GTX 280, respectively, will be better value for money, and secondly, the performance improvements simply not worth it yet. A single GTX 280 will cost less than any dual-GPU set-up of two HD3850s restriction, and even surpass them.
Give the time has come, however. There is a group of people who definitely should seek to go SLI in the near future, and that is many, many people who bought a GeForce 8800GT.
It is the history of marketing for the manufacturer did not boast, because if they knew that could really hurt sales of the new cards. Thanks to the maturity of the driver the benefit of the couple two of these are huge: In short, in some cases two 8800GTS is cheaper and faster than a GTX 260, and faster than a HD4870. Also, if you own part, a second card will cost just as much as a single HD4850 right – but be quick. It is likely to start disappearing from store shelves soon.
It is likely that the current generation of cards will begin to scale as well as the 8800GT in the not too distant future, but why take the bet? For the first time in the history of the charts with the best and can not be the best – and have SLI and CrossFire for all its flaws to thank for that.
