The condition known as acid reflux is a common disease affecting 15 million Americans. Reflux term comes from a Greek word meaning "return" which is appropriate since the painful symptoms associated with acid reflux are the result of stomach acid reflux into the esophagus.

These acids, required for digestion, are allowed to escape the stomach and esophagus to rise due to a failure of the flap at the top of the stomach that is supposed to keep stomach fluids down.

Common effects of acid reflux are gas and heartburn. Sometimes, however, no heartburn, but a more mysterious set of effects, such as hoarseness, difficulty swallowing, chronic cough, excess mucus throat, or feeling a lump in his throat. This form is known as laryngopharyngeal reflux (LPR) or Silent Reflux.

In the case of silent reflux, stomach acid, not only rises to the esophagus but does it all the way up in the larynx or pharynx. It can occur during the day or night and, unlike regular acid reflux, this is not exclusively around eating times.

Because of the nature of "silent" reflux is thus difficult to diagnose. Obvious signs are excessive throat clearing, difficulty swallowing and the feeling of a lump in the throat.

The specialist in charge of silent reflux is the otolaryngologist or Ear, Nose and Throat Doctor. Swollenness and / or redness in the voice box and the lower throat are a good indication of silent reflux.

There are two common tests, usually orders together to check for silent reflux. A barium swallow involves x-rays taken after swallowing a chalky material. This test shows how the mechanism of swallowing everything is working.

pH Metry is another test, and requires an overnight stay in hospital that takes 24 hours to complete. In this test soft, flexible tube, called a pH probe is connected at one end to a computer worn around his waist, and placed through the nose to stay in the throat during the night. It measures the acid in the esophagus and throat.

Neither the procedure is painful, but each is unpleasant in their own way. Treatment for silent reflux is individualized, ranging from a simple change in diet to drugs and sometimes surgery.

Some things that cause reflux include smoking, alcohol, caffeine, tight clothing, fried foods, red meat and dairy products. Limited quantities of these things is healthy for anyone is any situation and a good place to start when reflux or improve your overall health.
