Is there any risk in replacing the RAM on my MacBook?

I have the Aluminum Macbook late 2008. This is a 13-inch screen. I had intended to upgrade the RAM and I've seen a couple of videos on how to do it. However, I am confused about whether or not I need to back up all my files before upgrading the RAM. So in other words, I can just upgrade the RAM without saving anything on an external drive or a lot of records?

Your data is stored in RAM. It is saved on your hard drive. Whenever you close your computer, the RAM is wiped. So no, you should have no concern about losing data when you upgrade the RAM. I will say that's always a good idea to have a regular back up procedure in place, as their unit hard disk can fail due to power or mechanical problems and you may lose all data on it.
