Can I use my Compaq desktop RAM for my Gateway laptop?

I just use a computer and Im taking my room space. My laptop is slow growing, but I use it almost every day. Can I use the RAM on my Compaq?

Not because the marks are different is because laptops and desktop RAM are designed differently (different sizes). So no you can not.

Laptops have always seemed a very desirable item to have. Not only are they pretty good, but you can take your computing anywhere. Until recently thought I would have always advised against them.

Why do this? Well there are several factors – some are still in force today day. Laptops used to be very expensive. You could get much more power and reliability to spend half the money on a desktop you would pay double money for a laptop. Moreover, laptops are often slow dramatically when heated, is not good considering that the laptops, with a minimum airflow, the heat extremely fast.

Another thing to consider is what happens if these laptops go wrong? In a desktop PC if the RAM you will not buy RAM from any manufacturer to the rate and ready! – You are back. Same applied to the motherboard and many other places. All parties to a desktop PC can be cut and changed, relatively easily and reasonably priced.

Now if the RAM or motherboard failure on your computer laptop what is happening here? Well, basically, that manufacturers have that by the short and Curlies. Usually you can only buy parts manufacturer directly, can charge whatever they like as it is minimal if not zero competition. Not only can charge whatever they want, you can often wait weeks to get the required part.

People also have this idea with laptops that can take their computers anywhere and play their games or surf the Internet with complete freedom – This is true part of a new laptop with a new battery. After what I think is a very short time, your battery no longer hold its charge for 2 hours I had when new. It will now last only half an hour – and, of course, if you are doing something challenging, like gambling or the like, you can expect this time to reduce the at least half again.

So now your laptop must be plugged into the mains – so not so portable after all!

So far I have put the laptop down, is expensive, if it works, is very expensive if it breaks. It is not as safe as you think and its performance will not be as good as you expected.

This is now changing, as laptops have plummeted in cost. Whereas you used to have to pay a minimum of £ 600 ($ 1200 approx.) In a low specification machine can take a decent make, decent specced machine for about half that price. Now, if you weigh the fact that a desktop will cost around £ 200 for a useful means anything, then you need a monitor – the laptop is already winning on cost. Also the technology for heat dissipation has greatly improved so you can expect your laptop to stay cool for more time and better performance in the heat.

If the battery life has improved somewhat, but still much work to be done here at last instance, laptops. However, the new compact light engine is easy to transport from home, office, your colleagues, etc, etc, with ease and all your data comes with it.

You of course still have the question of whether something is wrong, but now there are thousands of these machines that are sold – this means that if you pick a decent brand, there are plenty of parts around Ebay or similar.

I now do all my work on a laptop. I connect to an external keyboard, such as writing on a laptop keyboard is not comfortable. If I wanted to play any game then I think it would be with the desktop – but for day to day use of the laptop is the winner. Easy to put away, cables least minimum mess and ultimately a portable office.
