Laptops are traditionally driven by one of three different types of batteries. They are nickel-cadmium, nickel-metal hydride, and ion lithium used today. Fujitsu is now releasing a laptop in Japan that runs on air. Not really, but they are marketing it as such. For every laptop FMV Loox sold in Japan Fujitsu to buy enough green wind energy credits to equal the amount of energy for portable use is estimated that over a period four years. That's a lot of green.
Fujitsu is the estimate that each FMV Loox laptops will be used as follows 240 days each year for four years:
- Actively used 4.5 hours per day
- Accused 4.5 hours per day
- Off during 15 hours a day
This use is equal to approximately 45.5 hours kilowatts and releases about 18 kilograms of CO2 into the atmosphere.
This means Fujitsu will purchase an equivalent amount of wind power in Japan Natural Energy Co. Thus, while the laptops are contaminated themselves, wind power will be available for use that otherwise would not. This theoretically serves as a zero-sum gain in CO2 emissions by taking the environmental footprint of the FMV Loox little to nothing. The savings to the environment is not free however.
The cost of wind energy credits is at least to some degree passed on to consumers. The green laptop will cost the equivalent of $ 1155.00, while a similar machine would not be green in the neighborhood of $ 780.00. So laptop buyers in Japan, who want to help save the environment will have to chip in $ 375 for it (about 37k Yen). No it is cheap laptops.
The FMV Loox the following specifications:
- Intel Atom
- 1 GB of memory
- 5.6-inch screen
- Up to 120GB of storage
- Wireless Adapter
The Intel Atom processor is currently the smallest available in the world's smallest transistors. The chip also has the lowest use energy of any other Intel chip.
Chip, Intel Executive Vice President Sean Maloney said, "The Intel ® Atom ™ is Based on a completely new design, built for low power and designed specifically for a new wave of mobile Internet devices and simple, low cost PC's. This small wonder is a fundamental new shift in design, small yet powerful enough to enable a big Internet experience in these new devices. "
With the use of energy and the environment in mind this was the obvious chip to work.
The FMV Loox available only through the Fujitsu web site at this time. U.S. News has not been announced.
