Integrated Drive Electronics (IDE) refers not only the connector and interface definition, but also the fact that the drive controller is integrated into the unit, rather than a separate controller or connected to the motherboard.
Integrated Drive Electronics later renamed to ATA, with the alias of P-ATA (Parallel ATA) retroactively added to the introduction of the new variant of Serial ATA.
