How can I apply the thermal paste that I bought when installing my new computer parts?

I'm building my own computer, and from my CPU did not come with a fan, I bought my own and some thermal paste. Should I apply a small amount to the bottom of the CPU fan or what? How much do I have to apply and spread it around us so uniform? I'm building today, because all parties came last night and I wonder if someone could help me please.

It is necessary to apply enough to give a thin, even covering. Even going out when the fan clip in place, but good to get close enough before doing that.
