PCI Express x16 bandwidth questions?
I am thinking of building a new team-If I put in 2 ATI 4890s, Dual PCIe x8 is sufficient? A many motherboards today use PCI Express x16 1 slot, but if you put in 2, becomes PCI Express x8.
If you're going to build a platform you can use two of 4890, spending a few dollars more and buy a motherboard with two x16 slots at x16. Or at least a motherboard that two cards can use 16 bi-directional the streets of a slot and bi-directional 8 lanes for the second. You need to go to the website of motherboard manufacturers to find, but usually list the amount lanes maximum the board can handle. I can not remember where I read it, but there is a decrease of 20% in performance when operating in x8 slot versus x16. Many of the tables with 3 or more PCIe x16 slots can handle two x16 slots.
