Control of summer heat, winter frost and temperatures of between 50% or more of the energy used in the average American household, so R-value is very important.
What is the R-value? Value of R is the term used to describe the thermal resistance, or efficiency Insulation material is heat resistant. High insulation R effective equality of material values, which means more appropriate levels of heat and fresh energy throughout the year. Measuring value of R is determined by the density, thickness, and type of material used.
Different types of insulation
In general, there are four types of insulation:
- Foam in place
- Sealants
- Rigid
- Rolls and Batts (or blankets)
The values of r and Benefits
For the basements in the United States, the recommended value R average insulation is R-12. With this in mind, here is a summary of the four main types of insulation:
Foam in place this type of insulation foam insulation is applied to areas that need additional insulation finish due to factors such as cracks or air leaks through doors and windows. Spray foam insulation is one of the most popular forms of this type of insulation. Cementitous, phenolic, polyisocynurate, and polyurethane are four types materials spray foam insulation. foam high density polyurethane only has an R value of about 6.8.
Packing material loose-fill insulation, which must be blown to be installed, it is better to keep to where other forms of isolation are not well adapted, as the floors in the attic and places that are difficult to reach. Cellulose (such as loose fibers or pellets), fiberglass or rock wool are usually the types of material used in insulation filler material. Blown cellulose carries an insulation R-value of 3.7, and fiberglass has an R value of 3.14.
The beauty of rigid foam insulation rigid foam is that you get very thick insulation with high R values, that conform to places with limited space. Although installing the foam tends to me more expensive than the fiber installation, you can breathe easy with R values 4-6.5. The materials under the rigid foam insulation are made of polystyrene and polyurethane spray foam.
Rolls and Batts (or blankets) This form of isolation is probably the best DIY projects, as can be installed with relative ease. Generally used for unfinished ceilings, floors and walls. Batts types of paper and include fiberglass, mineral wool, and both plastic and natural fibers. Fiberglass Batt R takes a value of 3.1.
