Bios Chip
Bios Chip
ethernetcard my desk has a slot for what seems like a bios chip.is it to improve or "speed" up?

"3Com" PCI 3C905B XL #

The slot or socket on ethernet cards is to add a chip that allows a computer to boot from the network. If there is a special team boot server on the network, a team with one of these special ethernet cards can boot tongue without any local disk or hardrive … etc. This could be good for a team that wants to make it completely silent (no moving hard drives) or a production team that gets too hot …. etc

Intro

BIOS (pronounced "per OSE") means Basic Input / Output System. It is a program that resides in a small chip that is built into the motherboard. These instructions for carrying out important tasks and provide the steps in the boot process.

The process of

Turn on the computer, there must be some way to get it all began. Once the processor receives a signal of good power, runs a bit of code in a particular memory address (FFFF: 0000) in the BIOS jumps to the actual memory location that stores the main program of the BIOS. The initiation process into action. The first task is committed BIOS loads the information from the CMOS (Complementary Metal Oxide Semiconductor) chip. Many people use the BIOS and CMOS terms interchangeably. They are not the same. The BIOS chip contains a program (Recall that a program performs the instructions). The CMOS chip contains just BIOS settings that are specific to a system, such as the number of hard drives, processor type, amount of memory, and many other things. These Settings can be changed by the user to reflect changes in your computer. For example, if you buy your own video card, you may have to go into CMOS and turn off the embedded video before installing the new card. The BIOS, however, is altered through software. By loading the CMOS and BIOS knows the makeup of your system.

Access CMOS screen varies from system to system and is usually contained in the computer manual. Another way to find out is look at the bottom left corner of the screen about seconds after power on your computer. A message that tells you to press a certain key to enter setup. The majority use "DEL" "F1", "ESC", or some combination of keys. If you make changes to CMOS, you must save before exiting. Always check the settings before storage. Incorrect configuration can cause problems. A battery small, flat, usually made of lithium, keep these settings after the computer is off. These batteries last for years.

After CMOS, interrupt handlers and device drivers are basic loaded. An interrupt controller is software that facilitates communication between the operating system (OS) and processor. That "calls attention to the Processor when there is some action. When you press a key, the keyboard interrupt tells the processor which key was pressed, and that information is sent operating system. A device driver is another type of software that allows components to be recognized.

Then, if the system has adapter cards are checked to see if they contain their own BIOS.

Then comes the POST (Power On Self Test). During POST, the devices are controlled for mistakes, starting with the video card. The graphics adapter BIOS, if present, controls the processor and memory card. If everything is well you'll see the manufacturer's name and version of the system BIOS, plus the name, model and amount of memory video card at the top left of the screen.

From there, the clearance checks to see if a cold start or restart the system (also called hot start) occurred by looking at the number located in a certain memory address (0000:0472). If the stored value is 123h (memory addresses and values are expressed in hexadecimal, hence the "h" at the end) is a restart, otherwise, a cold start. A cold start performs a memory test. To restart the test jumps. Other components are then controlled, such as ports, mouse, keyboard and disk controllers. Next, decide which device is the boot device and displays information Basics
your system.

During POST the BIOS compares the results to the CMOS settings. If any mistake is heard well any sound or see an error message. If all goes well, is in the boot device to the Master Boot Record (MBR) that indicates where to find the operating system. Once found, the BIOS process ends.

Updating the BIOS

At some point you may have to update the BIOS to adapt to hardware changes, but generally this is rare. This is often called "BIOS", and that is stored in flash memory. But if it a time when the update is necessary, go to the BIOS manufacturer, the site of the motherboard, or the team's web page whether it is a name brand system. Sure know the date and BIOS revision. The instructions are usually given to you through the process. They are followed closely.

Two of the major BIOS manufacturers Phoenix Technologies and are American Megatrends (AMI)
