Two graphics chips. One card. And a whole lotta fun benefit: This is the basic philosophy behind the X2 ATI Radeon HD 4870, the last double CPU AMD 3D card. Actually, that's the philosophy AMD has taken to high-quality graphics in general. It is not intended to duke out with NVIDIA at the top market, instead of producing a monstrous GPU, AMD's plan is to slap NVIDIA GPU fool a little more compact with two crammed into a single card.
But there is a trouble. In the past, two chips on one board has been a recipe for a double problem, do not double your fun. The multi-GPU technology in multi-card format has always been questionable in terms of stability and reliability; a rather worrying for a single card performance based on multi-GPU expansion of its own existence.
NVIDIA launched the modern version of the evolution of dual chip GeForce 7950 GX2. That the Board has worked quite well at first. But then, NVIDIA launched throughout a new graphics architecture, and frankly, their driver team GX2 stopped worrying about the 7950.
And drivers are absolutely crucial when it comes to any form of multi-GPU technology. Both the NVIDIA SLI platform and competence profiles using ATI CrossFire technology game controller to detect and correctly apply the methods of multi GPU.
If no driver profile for a specific game or if the game is not detected correctly, you are into trouble. Maybe it will only GPU performance. At worst, the game does not work at all.
The task for the new X2 Radeon HD 4870 is therefore clear. To be taken seriously, should eliminate all multi-GPU track of unreliability and deliver the kind of stability and ease of use that users expect from a single chip graphics card.
On paper, there is reason for optimism. For starters, AMD has updated its inter-GPU PCI Express bridge chip 1.0 to 2.0 specification and added a bi-directional SidePort 5GB for each GPU. Consequently, overall inter-GPU bandwidth has been boosted from 6.8Gbps to 2l.8Gbps.
Likewise, AMD has done a really smart move in completely filling 2GB of graphics memory on this card. At very high resolutions, 512MB per GPU may not be enough to store all game data. When that happens, a graphics card is forced to use the PCI Express to retrieve data. And that means faster frame horribly slow. But with 1 GB per GPU, the 4870 should suffer from no such defect.
Fully Automagic
The 4870 X2 is also extremely easy to use by various rules of the GPU. Is shown as a single-purpose device driver installation and no need for users to consider allowing multi-GPU scaling, everything happens automatically. Unlike most multi-GPU cards, the 4870 X2 is also capable of multi-screen support complete.
But what the 4870 X2 does not is clearly moving the game forward in a technological sense. One day a company will produce multi-chip solution that behaves like a device of single representation, thereby bypassing many current problems of the GPU. But that day has not arrived. In essence, the 4870 X2 CrossFire remains on a card and is so dependent on aid to the driver like any other multi-GPU technology available.
The CPU is essentially raised by a plate of chips 4870. It's the same 55nm die GPU running on a 750MHz identical. The 4870 X2 therefore packages of 1,600 stream processors and a theoretical maximum of 2.4TFLOPs computing performance. A helluva lot, in other words.
Similarly, the data rate of 3.6 Mbps of GDDR5 memory graph is identical to that of a single-chip 4870. And like all other 4800 series card, the 4870 X2 offers support for DirectX 10.1. For the value of what it is, NVIDIA GPUs are in competition 10.0 of the envelope.
Breakdown
When conducting the 4870 X2, which works very well. Given that 4870 is not only all As well behind NVIDIA's GeForce GTX 280, it comes as no surprise to find the 4870 X2 has its measure, when multiple GPU is in full swing.
The 4870 performance GRID is also shown the benefits of all that memory video. The pair of 4870s in CrossFire mode really fall off a cliff at 2,560 x 1,600. No no problem for such X2 4870 and his twin 1GB memory buffers. If memory availability is not a problem, X2 scales largely identical to the 4870s in CrossFire.
That's the good news. Now get ready for worse. The X2 does not deliver in the one game where we really want the best performance, Crysis – as so do the 4870s in CrossFire mode. Both configurations block in about five seconds after loading the level.
Now, we suspect that the X2 functions as provided in 95 percent of system configurations. But unfortunately, not ours. Given more time and correspondence with AMD, we are confident that the solution be presented.
We really want as the new X2. In many respects, especially the memory buffers and multi-monitor, the HD 4870 is a dual-GPU done right. And when it works properly, it is immensely faster results. But the harsh reality is that while multi-GPU technology is based on driver profiles, it will be a flaky, hit-and-miss affair. And one can not in good conscience recommend that you buy.
